What to Wear?!?
PREPARING FOR YOUR FAMILY PHOTO SESSION
Coordinating your Outfits:
It’s important to coordinate your outfits without your group wearing all the exact same thing. Give the idea a more modern spin by picking two to three colors that complement each other, or wear different shades of the same color. Spice it up with a favorite accent color, like red, and have one or two people wear just a small touch of that. Plaids and stripes are good – but keep them to a minimum. One plaid or stripe for a group of 4 or less. Try to avoid having just one person wear a completely different color, especially when that color is very bright or in stark contrast to the rest of the family. This draws the attention just to that person instead of unifying the group. Also, try to avoid bright or neon colors as they will reflect a color cast on your skin and other’s skin. See below to click on links to examples of clothing ideas.
This is how I would try to coordinate a family:
I would pick the “most unique" person in the family to wear the colorful outfit and then everyone else go off that. By unique, I mean – the littlest girl and/or boy in the family, the mom, the only girl.
The Fit of Clothing:
Fitted clothes look much more polished and flattering than loose clothes, which can make you appear boxy. Check the fit of jackets, sweaters or collared shirts, and be sure that the collar won’t obscure your face when you sit down and that the shoulders won’t bunch up. Make sure you are comfortable in your clothing and are able to pose sitting, kneeling, and crouching, etc. Sometimes too short or too tight of clothing is hard to pose in and you will look stressed. Be sure all undergarments you do not want seen are concealed. Wear matching or strapless bras if needed. Make sure to empty all pockets (cell phones, chap stick, rocks, frogs, etc.).
Try to get haircuts a week in advance, especially the guys. Groom fingernails and also toenails if wearing sandals. Chipped polish shows up in photos. Wax or pluck eyebrows in advance, if necessary.
Pinterest is a fantastic resource with lots of ideas showing how to group colors and pick a variety of outfits that you’ll love to show off. I have several boards on “What to Wear” if you want to check it out.
